Hands serves low-income single mothers and widows in need so that they reach and maintain self-sufficiency.

Hands delivers services through their Good Neighbor Garage (GNG) Program, which focuses on providing vehicle-related services for low/fixed income single mothers and widows to prevent or solve vehicle crisis issues. The overarching goal is to remove the obstacle that unreliable transportation presents as women strive to be self-sufficient, maintain jobs, get training, and care for their families. The underlying issue isn’t so much that cars create opportunity. Rather, it’s that there are many places one can’t access opportunity without a car.

Program service components include:

Vehicle Placement: Through this service, the Good Neighbor Garage places reliable, donated cars with women who are working or are in school/job training, whose current vehicles cannot be repaired or don’t have a car.

Vehicles Education: Women are taught valuable information about their cars to increase their knowledge and awareness to prevent small issues from growing into big problems.

Vehicle Maintenance: The program conducts a multi-point vehicle safety check and oil change at bi-monthly Car Care Clinics for women who have received other services and for those new to Hands.

Vehicle Repairs: Work is performed by ASE Certified mechanics at a Good Neighbor Garage affiliate repair facility to address issues causing unreliability and frustration.
